Mirrored Fascination explores contrasting musical worlds through the interplay of jazz and the profound voice of a Soviet master. A prolific composer of jazz and popular music, Gershwin was captivated by Modernist composers, including Shostakovich. Shostakovich was equally fascinated with early jazz in Russia, regarding it as a revelation of America, and inspiring his own Jazz Suites. Pianist Hoang Pham performs Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, a dazzling blend of classical orchestration and jazz that highlights the composer’s flair for colour and innovation. From its infectious opening to the exhilarating finale, the work channels the spirit of Ragtime, marking the roots of Gershwin’s legendary career. Written months after Stalin’s death, during a time of uncertainty and hope, Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony stands among his most powerful and emotionally intense symphonies.
